Nashville Tea Party

On the steps of the state capitol.

A crowd of about 600 attended the protest of congressional waste and Obama's agenda for the country.

The drizzle didn't seem to bother anybody.

About a hundred people marched from the state capitol building down to Congressman Cooper's office to voice their disapproval of his vote for Porkulus.

Cooper wasn't there, but the crowd spoke to the staffers for about 20 minutes.

Why We Need Approval Voting

We've been planning a blog entry on approval voting for some time her at Poor Richard's News plan to write an in depth article sometime in the near future.  However, I wanted to throw this out there because I came across an article today in the Washington Post that very accurately proves our point.  The goal of approval voting is to prevent the fallacy of the majority, also known as the "spoiler effect" or the "Ralph Nader effect."  Basically if, you've got two candidates with a similar platform, they split the votes representing those views and very often the winner of an election ends up being a third candidate whose views don't reflect the majority of voters.

This effect took place in the 2000 election when the majority of voters voted between the two liberal candidates (Gore and Nader), and we saw it again in 2008 during the Republican primary when the various conservatives (Huckabee, Paul, Thompson, Romney) lost out to John McCain.

And now, here's today example of a ridiculous situation that could have been avoided with approval voting:

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/02/19/AR2009021901780.html

Spend time with George Mason University senior Ryan Allen and it's clear why he's a Big Man on Campus. He wears size 12 pumps.

Allen is now -- as of halftime at Saturday's sold-out basketball game against Northeastern at the Patriot Center -- the school's homecoming queen. He received more votes than the two women who vied for the crown.

Allen, who is gay and performs as a popular drag queen at local clubs, assumed the title of Ms. Mason. He was wearing a green-and-gold bow, sewn for him by the theater department costume's shop, that was visible even from the cheap seats, a sequined top, a black skirt and heels. Ricky Malebranche, a junior from Woodbridge, was named Mr. Mason.

Beyond the joyful tears and tiara, Allen's election exposed conflicting cultural currents at the sprawling campus in Fairfax County. Many see it as an expression of inclusiveness at a place where about one-third of the 30,000 students are minority. But others say it is an embarrassment at an inopportune time when Mason is trying to revamp its image from commuter school to distinguished institution of higher learning.

Now, the article didn't exactly give us the numbers, but upon reading the tell-tale line stating that there were TWO women, the conclusion is pretty clear.  The two women who ran for homecoming queen split the votes and now George Mason University has a dude walking around in a tiara and pumps during their halftime show.

This is, of course, a silly example, but when it comes to primary, congressional, and national elections, the fallacy of the majority has some serious implications.  A system of voting in which voters are able to indicate which candidates they approve of would completely rid us of this pesky misrepresentation of what America really wants.

How Would You Describe It, Mr. President?

Born Alive Infant's Mother Speaks Out

This one is downright hard to read. During the 2008 election season, I wrote an article about Barack Obama's voting record concerning live birth abortion (infanticide) during his brief tenure in the Illinois state legislature. Over and over again he voted to deny medical care to infants born as a result of botched abortion attempts. During the campaign, Obama offered up a lot of excuses and smoke and mirrors about his record, and the press never looked into the issue. Only I and a few other passionate folks continuously trumpeted the truth on this issue.

One of the pitiful excuses Obama offered on his "fight the smears" website was that voting to ban live birth abortion would "pose a threat to a woman's right to choose." The following is the story of just such a woman. When she chose to end her baby's life, she had no idea the horror that was about to experience.

In the summer of 2006, 18 year old Florida native Sycloria Williams felt like she was out of options. She went to Dr. Pierre Jean-Jacque Renelique at a Women's Care Inc. clinic and paid $1200 for a late-term abortion on her 23-week old unborn baby. Dr. Renelique gave her a vague description of the procedure and sent her home with meds to make her dilate and induce labor.

The next day, Sycloria returned to the clinic and was given more meds to induce labor. The meds took effect with more speed than the doctors or nurses anticipated and she ended up giving birth to her baby girl Shanice in the waiting room. Here is the description of the event from Florida Catholic:

What happened next haunts her to this day, Williams said. "It was like everything inside was coming out at once."

Williams recalls grabbing the armrests of her chair and elevating herself to a squatting position, heels at the edges of her seat. The receptionist and staff kept telling her to sit down and close her legs, but she couldn't comply. "There was just no stopping it," she said.

Williams said she delivered her baby, Shanice, onto the recliner almost immediately after squatting. First amniotic fluid spilled out, then the baby dropped onto the cushion.

"When I saw that happen, I jumped off the chair and turned away, facing the wall," Williams said.

Shanice's body slid on the blood and amniotic fluids into the rear corner of the recliner because she was still attached to Williams by the umbilical cord. "When I jumped off I pulled her like into the back of the chair because she was still attached," she said.

According to Williams and the lawsuit, the receptionist and the staff began screaming and rushing, trying to figure out what to do. Williams said she stood against the wall, glancing in horror at her newborn baby. "She wasn't moving much. Twitching, gasping for air. She wasn't crying though, just hissing. Hissing sounds only."

The sight of a fully formed baby was a complete surprise to Williams.

"I thought it would be a blob thing, but bigger, not a baby," she said. "She looked like a Water Baby. Like those dolls you fill up with water. She was really little, like this," she said, holding her hands about 12 inches apart.

(Water Babies are sold in stores such as Toys "R" Us. A product description on the Toys "R" Us online store reads, "Water Babies are water-filled dolls that replicate the warmth, weight and feel of a real baby.")

According to the lawsuit and Williams' recollection, Gonzalez, the clinic's owner, who has no health care licensing, came into the waiting room, cut the umbilical cord, and scooped Shanice's body into a red biohazard bag, sealed it and tossed it into a trash can.

Williams said she was in shock. "It felt like a dream," she said.

She recalls begging God for help and trying to listen to the staff. They only gave her Motrin for her pain because Renelique had not yet arrived. "Everyone was panicking," Williams said.

According to the lawsuit, the doctor arrived about 60 minutes after Williams delivered Shanice. No one called an ambulance. The lawsuit also states that Renelique gave Williams a shot to put her to sleep: "She awoke after the procedure and was sent home still in complete shock."

She said while Shane was driving her home, she told him, "I don't think that baby was dead."

What followed was a police investigation that recently ended in Dr. Renelique losing his medical license, the owners of the clinic being arrested, and two of the other Doctors at the clinic were found to be practicing without a license. Police found baby Shanice's body decomposing in a cardboard box in a closet and Williams was able to burry her. Sycloria has since changed her mind on abortion and is now against it completely.

"No one should lose their life if you get pregnant," she said. "If I got pregnant again I would have the baby."

The recent resolution of Sycloria William's lawsuit serves us as a reminder of the horrors of abortion, but sadly, Sycloria's story is not unique. As Jill Stanek testified before Congress, this sort of thing was happening at an alarming rate in Illinois. Thankfully, congress unanimously did what Barack Obama wouldn't: pass a law mandating that infants born alive as a result of a botched abortion were to be afforded the same rights and medical care as you are I.

Now, our new President is caught up with matters of the economy and foreign policy, but it didn't keep him from overturning the Mexico City Policy within his first week of office, allowing Federal money to be given to organizations that perform abortions overseas. Thankfully congress hasn't yet had time to put the so-called "Freedom of Choice Act" (which would strip away and and every restriction on abortion in the US) on Obama's desk, be he has already promised to sign it as soon as it passes. These are the ramifications of America's vote, the evil consequences of "hope and change."

What, Exactly, Do You Mean By 'Read It'?

There has been much speculation lately about whether the representatives actually had enough time to read the porkulus bill they whisked through on Friday. 11 Hours to read 1,100 pages?

Curious about this, I called my representative to ask him if he had read it. "Yes" came the immediate reply of the halfway offended receptionist on the other end. Still not satisfied, I decided to download the bill and read it for myself. After scouring the Internet for quite some time, I finally found the bill's final form buried deep on some obscure government web site (so much for "government transparency").

After downloading it, I tried to perform a word count only to realize that many of the words in the document were written in by hand and therefore couldn't be counted. Furthermore, the bill was riddled with hand-drawn corrections, inserts and slashes that seemed to make no sense (except to, maybe, the people who wrote them).

The bill more closely resembled an 8th grade English paper written by a D student than an $800 Billion piece of legislation. In any case, I performed the word count and came up with a rough estimate of 185,255 words. Divide that by the number by the words per minute read by the average educated person (225) and it should have taken each lawmaker 13 hours, 43 minutes and 21 seconds to read the entire bill with perfect comprehension and no breaks.

I think we can safely assume that no one read it...oh and that they lied to us. Surprise Surprise.

How to Break 7 Promises With One Bill

"I will also institute an absolute gift ban so that no registered lobbyist can curry favor with members of my administration based on how much they can spend on a fancy dinner. I'll make our government open and transparent so that anyone can ensure that our business is the people's business. And Justice Louis Brandeis once said, "Sunlight is the greatest disinfectant." And as President, I'm going to make it impossible for congressman or lobbyists to slip pork barrel projects or coporate welfare into laws when no one's looking because when I'm President meetings where laws are written will be more open to the public. No more secrecy: that's the commitment I make to you as President. No more secrecy. And when there's a bill that ends on my desk, as President, you the public will have five days to look online and fine out what's in it before I sign it so that you know what you're government is doing. When there are meetings between lobbyists and a government agency, we'll put as many as possible online for every American to watch. When there is a tax bill being debated in Congress, you will know the names of the corporations that would benefit and how much money they would get. And we will put every corporate tax break and every pork-barrel project online for every American to see. You will know who asked for them and you can decide whether your representative is actually representing you."

~Barack Obama

1. Make government open and transparent.

2. Make it "impossible" for Congressmen to slip in pork barrel projects.

3. Meetings where laws are written will be more open to the public.

4. No more secrecy.

5. Public will have 5 days to look at a bill.

6. You’ll know what’s in it.

7. We will put every pork barrel project online.

Who Wants Some Pork?

Here are a few interesting things about $950,000,000,000:

1) You could stack pennies to the sun (literally).

2) You could fill 12 empire state buildings with nickels.

3) You could tile Barack Obama's home state of Hawai'i with pennies and still have enough

left over to tile Joe Biden's home state of Delaware.

4) You could fill the Superdome with dimes.

5) You could buy Starbuck's coffee for every American every day for three years.

6) The Quarters would weigh as much as the people in California, Texas and New York combined.

7) You could buy Disney, Wal-Mart, Google, Ford, Microsoft, Apple, Sony, Nike, Boeing, McDonald's

and every NFL, MLB, NBA and NHL team individually and still have enough left over to buy every

member of congress their very own F-16.

8) You could pay for the Iraq war and have enough left over to rebuild the entire Gulf Coast after Katrina.

9) You could end world hunger for 30 years.

10) You could adopt every orphan in the United States and have enough left over to give each of them $8,000,000

—More than enough to feed, clothe, house and educate them and their families for the rest of their lives.

Please call your congressman and tell them to vote against this ridiculous spending bill. After all, it's our money. Not theirs!
